Kalpavalli is the Timbaktu Collective’s community-led ecological restoration programme that started in 1992 to revive degraded village commons in Andhra Pradesh’s Sri Sathya Sai district. Its central achievement is the 4000 acre Kalpavalli Community Conservation Area (KCCA) — formerly barren revenue wasteland transformed into a functioning savannah grassland and wildlife corridor. Timbaktu Collective worked with villagers in Chennekothapalli, Roddam, and Ramagiri mandals to protect and regenerate common lands affected by deforestation, overgrazing, fires, and drought. It helped organize local institutions, including the Kalpavalli Tree Growers’ Cooperative Society, who now run the Bush Camp for education and awareness purposes.
The area now supports notable wildlife, including the vulnerable Indian grey wolf, blackbucks, leopard, sloth bear, and hyaena. Surveys cited by the Sanctuary Nature Foundation report 22 mammal species, 123 bird species, and 28 reptile and amphibian species.
Kalpavalli is significant because it treated restoration as a **commons problem**, not merely a planting project. By giving villages a cooperative structure, paid/community forest-watch roles, agreed grazing and harvest rules, and fire protection, Timbaktu helped make conservation economically and socially durable. It also links ecology to livelihoods: local families benefit from grazing small ruminants, NTFP collection, ecotourism, while the restored land provides water retention, soil moisture, carbon sequestration, pollination, and habitat benefits.

If you have a car that can do mild off roading and has ok ground clearance, go all the way. Else park at the farm school and switch to the farm jeep or pickup (you'll have to let us know in advance).

The Watchtower Hike takes you through restored grasslands upto an old watchtower. 9kms in all through a rejuvenated landscape. Moderate.
The Hill Top Birding Walk, 3kms and slow and easy, observing the birds and learning, learning, learning...
The Ghati Madugu Trek. Start at Guttur madugu and walk across the stream. 10kms - moderate.
Great birding's guaranteed. And very very likely that you'll see blackbucks. Leopards? Hmmmm, who knows...

About 180kms, just off the Hyderbad Highway close to the KIA factory. The access is quick, but the last 8-10 kms take you to a completely different world on mud roads and trails, away from maps and concrete. Plan for about 3 hours to get there.
What can we do there?
The landscape is amazing for hikes, birding and hosts a wide variety of wildlife. This is true, deep savannah experience and the team has trained, well informed and passionate naturalists and experts who help you explore this.
Should we get our own tents?
Ah no. Accommodations are on an enclosed plinth with large, comfortable beds each with their own mosquito net. There are plenty of common washrooms and even showers in a common block - though we urge you to keep water usage to a minimum give this is a water stressed region. It's very outdoorsy but comfortable and spacious, overall.
